Manual for Windows 11 and Windows 10 customization settings to change the appearance of the framework for each need and taste.

On Windows 11 we have various customization options accessible without having to install any third-party program: just move through the settings and some menus to make our Windows 11 truly unique, activating or deactivating what we need and can use on our PC workstation.

In the following guide we will show you how to use the customization options of Windows 11 ; To gain access to all entries it is advisable to log in with a Microsoft account and activate Windows as soon as possible .

1) Desktop wallpaper

To change the desktop background, press the right mouse button on any empty point on the desktop, click on Personalize , select the Background menu and select the type of background to use in the Personalize the background section, choosing from one of the images provided with Windows, by choosing a personal image or a rotation of images.

2) Window and system colors

On Windows 11 we can customize the application of dark mode (or Dark Mode), applying it to all windows, to the entire system or by creating a hybrid combination between black and white.

To change the color of the windows and the system, press WIN+I on the keyboard, go to thePersonalization menu , press on Colors , expand the Choose mode section and choose between Light and Dark .

Alternatively we can choose Custom mode and set the default Windows mode (for example Dark ) and the default app mode (for example Light ).

If, however, we wanted to apply other colors to Windows we can choose the preferred color in the same window seen just now, by going to the Main Color section, selecting Manual and choosing the preferred color.

3) Screen lock screen

Indeed, even the Windows 11 lock screen can be modified by our requirements and tastes.

To proceed, press WIN+I , go to the path Personalization -> Lock screen , and use the items Customize the lock screen , Lock screen status Show the background image of the lock screen on the login screen , using the menus drop-down menu to select Microsoft photos, personal photos or a photo slideshow.

On the same screen we can change the screen time-out and adjust old Windows screen savers, as also seen in the guides on how to customize the lock screen in Windows 10 and 11 and how to use the best free screensavers for Windows 10 and 11 PCs .

4) Windows Themes

For users who want to get the most out of Windows, they can directly change the Windows theme , applying aesthetic changes to the background, color, default system sounds and mouse cursor in one fell swoop.

To choose a new theme for our PC, press WIN+I on the keyboard, go to thePersonalization -> Themes path , expand Current theme and choose one of the default Windows themes; to choose a new theme we can press on Browse themes and choose the favorite one from those present in the Microsoft Store.

Nothing stops us from creating our own theme by combining elements from different themes: to do so, all we have to do is press on the top of the element to configure (background, color, default system sounds and mouse cursor) and choose the preferred element .

5) Start Menu

The Beginning menu has been significantly changed in Windows 11 and we can tweak it through and through, picking which applications to show rapidly and whether to show the most utilized or as of late opened documents and applications.

To change the position, press WIN+I on the keyboard, open the path Personalization -> Start and choose the style of the anchored elements (at the top), choosing between Default , Other anchored elements or Other recommended elements .

In the same window we can choose whether to show recently added apps, whether to show the most used apps, whether to show recently opened items and files and choose which system folders to display.

6) Taskbar

The taskbar is perhaps the least customizable element, but we can still apply our preferences.

To proceed, we right-click on the taskbar, press on Taskbar Settings and use the items present to hide or modify the search bar, to manage the activity viewer, to activate or deactivate widgets, activate or deactivate the chat and choose whether to show the pen menu, the virtual keyboard key and the virtual touchpad. To change the position of the apps and the Start menu, expand the Taskbar Behaviors

menu and modify the item in Taskbar Alignment; in the same section we also find the keys to automatically hide the bar, show app badges and show app flashing.

7) Quick access in File Explorer

In the right column of the File Explorer app we can change quick access to the most used or favorite folders, so as to always have everything at hand.

To add folders for quick access, drag them to the preferred location; to remove them, right-click on them and press Remove from quick access .

8) Widgets

One of Windows 11's new features is widgets: It is made up of a special menu that can be found at the bottom left of the screen. This menu contains the taskbar's default settings and widgets that can be set up to suit our needs.

To add or remove widgets, press on the indicated menu and press on Add Widget , so you can customize the widget on weather, traffic forecasts, real-time news, stock market stocks and sports news; from the same menu we can press on Find other widgets to add other useful elements to the screen.

9) Notification area

The notification area in Windows 11 has changed compared to other versions of Windows , presenting fixed icons (Network, volume, battery, calendar and time) and the classic arrowhead that hides any auto-starting apps or activated system apps upon access.

The only customization we can do is drag the icons from the hidden area, so as to always show them in the notification area; we can also carry out the reverse process to hide icons that we do not use but which must always remain active (for example the antivirus icon).

10) Notification Center

On Windows 11 the notification center is accessible by pressing the fixed icons in the notification area (Network, volume, battery), also showing the quick function keys and any apps or notifications still active on our computer.

If we receive notifications from the app or from the system, a numerical indicator will appear at the bottom right; by clicking on it we will immediately have access to the notification center, so as to manage any unread or ignored notifications.

The notification center can be customized by opening it, pressing the pencil-shaped button and choosing what to add and what to remove, using the small modification keys or dragging the icons present; after the changes we press Finish to confirm our personal notification center.

11) Multitasking

Windows 11 features the Task View button, excellent for seeing open apps and programs and also managing virtual desktops that may be activated on your PC.

This button can be removed (as seen in one of the previous chapters) or used properly by reading our guide on how to use Virtual Desktops on Windows 11 and 10 .

12) Mouse cursor

On Windows 11 you can change the color and size of the mouse cursor. To do this, go to Settings > Accessibility and then, in the Cursors and Pointers section, choose a color other than white for the mouse arrow.

Under the bar for selecting the size, there are 4 options for coloring the cursor: you can choose to have the mouse arrow white, black, which changes from black to white automatically or colored differently. A third option also allows you to increase the thickness of the cursor.

Conclusions

Windows 11 is a system that can be customized as you like in terms of colours, style and behaviour ; many users consider it "inferior" to Windows 10 in terms of customization but, as we have seen in this guide, with the right settings we can make it truly unique, without using external programs.
